Browser-Based EMR Integration: Using Pippen Inside Oscar Pro, CHR, and Other Browser-Based EMRs
A practical walkthrough of Pippen’s updated Chrome extension for browser-based EMRs.
Pippen’s updated Chrome extension is designed for browser-based EMRs such as Oscar Pro and CHR. It lets clinicians use Pippen inside the EMR workflow, without opening a separate tab or copying and pasting notes back into the chart.
With the Chrome extension, clinicians can launch Pippen from inside the EMR, record an encounter, optionally pull relevant patient context from the chart, generate a clinical note, and transfer that note back into the EMR with a single click.
Installing the Chrome Extension
To install the Chrome extension, go to pippen.ai, open the Product menu, and click Downloads. From the Downloads page, choose the Chrome extension and click Install.
This will open the Chrome Web Store. From there:
- Click Add to Chrome.
- Confirm by clicking Add Extension.
- Pin the Pippen extension in Chrome so it is easy to access during clinic.

Opening Pippen Inside the EMR
Once the extension is installed and pinned, open your browser-based EMR. In the demo, we use Oscar Pro as the example.
Click the Pippen extension icon in Chrome. Pippen opens on the right-hand side of the EMR, so the chart stays visible while Pippen is available inside the same workflow.

Using the Full Panel or Mini Widget
Clinicians can use Pippen in two views:
- The full side panel, which shows the encounter controls, note settings, transcript, and generated note.
- The mini widget, which can be moved around the screen and keeps more of the EMR visible.
The mini widget is useful when you want Pippen recording in the background while you continue working in the chart.

Choosing the Microphone, Language, and Template
Inside the extension, clinicians can choose the microphone, language, and note template before starting the encounter.
The same encounter options are available, including:
- Selecting the active microphone.
- Choosing the language.
- Changing the note template.
- Saving the encounter start and end time.
- Using televisit audio support for virtual visits.
- Adding notes or files as extra context.
This keeps the setup close to the chart and avoids switching between multiple windows.
Pulling Patient Context From the EMR
One of the most helpful parts of the browser-based workflow is the option to pull context from the EMR.
When you click Pull Context from EMR, Pippen reviews the visible chart page and extracts relevant information that may help with the encounter. In the demo, Pippen identifies details such as the patient’s age and sex, along with other chart context such as previous encounters and allergies.
This step is optional. It is useful when you want Pippen to have chart context without saying everything out loud in front of the patient.

Recording an Encounter
After choosing the microphone, language, template, and any context, click Begin Encounter.
In the demo, the sample visit is a COPD follow-up. The clinician dictates a short note about the patient’s inhalers, exam findings, renewal plan, blood work requisition, smoking cessation counselling, and follow-up plan.
When the encounter is finished, click End Encounter. Pippen generates the note directly inside the extension.
Transferring the Note Back Into the EMR
After the note is generated, create a new progress note in the EMR and click Transfer Note to EMR.
The generated note is inserted directly into the EMR without copying and pasting. This is the main workflow improvement: clinicians can record, generate, review, and transfer the note without leaving the browser-based chart.

Editing the Note and Reviewing the Full Encounter
Clinicians can edit the generated note inside the extension before transferring it. They can also open the full encounter to review the transcript and access additional tools.
From the full encounter view, clinicians can review what was captured and use Pippen’s related tools, including differential, treatment, and referral support.
Drafting a Referral Letter Inside the Same Workflow
The Chrome extension also includes Chat with Pippen. In the demo, the clinician drafts a referral letter for Respirology directly from the encounter.
This means a clinician can complete the note and start related documentation without leaving the EMR workflow.

Using the Mini Widget During Clinical Work
The mini widget lets Pippen keep recording while the EMR remains fully visible. You can start the encounter from the mini widget, let the recording run in the background, and open the full panel when you want to review the transcript or generated note.
This is useful when screen space matters, especially during busy clinic sessions where the chart needs to stay visible.
Browser-Based EMR Support
The Chrome extension is especially useful for browser-based EMRs such as Oscar Pro and CHR.
If your browser-based EMR is not supported yet, please let us know. We are continuing to improve the workflow and would love feedback on which EMRs and steps clinicians want supported next.
Try It and Send Feedback
If you use a browser-based EMR, try the Chrome extension during a real clinical workflow and let us know how it feels. We would especially appreciate feedback on the EMR context pull, note transfer, mini widget, and any EMR-specific workflow you would like Pippen to support.
